Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial lung disease (ILD), also known as interstitial lung disease or diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD), refers to a group of disorders that affect the interstitium, which is the tissue and space surrounding the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. These diseases cause inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) of the interstitium, leading to difficulty in breathing and reduced lung function. There are numerous types of ILDs, and they can have various causes, including environmental exposures, autoimmune diseases, medications, and idiopathic (unknown) factors.
It's important for individuals with ILD to work closely with a healthcare provider, preferably a pulmonologist or a specialist in interstitial lung diseases, to determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on their specific condition. Early diagnosis and intervention can help manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve the quality of life for individuals with ILD.
